Backroom Brewery at Sunflower Cottage is dedicated to crafting exceptional beer, creating memorable experiences, and preserving the agricultural heritage of the Shenandoah Valley — bringing people together through the art of brewing, the warmth of Southern hospitality, and the beauty of Virginia's heartland, one pint, one celebration, and one harvest at a time.

Our Story

We didn't set out to open
a brewery.

It started with herbs. Sunflower Cottage was a working herb farm long before a single hop was harvested, long before anyone thought to hang a fermentation tank in the barn. The land came first.

In 2012 we planted our first hops on these ten Shenandoah Valley acres. By 2013 we were brewing with them — rinsed in the same spring water, dried in the same mountain air. What began as curiosity became obsession, and by 2016 Backroom Brewery opened its doors as Virginia's first farm brewery.

The farmhouse, the barn, the fields — none of it has changed. The beer just got better. Three Gold Medals later, we're still growing, still pouring, still convinced that the best pint is the one that knows exactly where it came from.

The Taproom

Beer that begins in
the field behind the barn.

Every pint at Backroom Brewery carries the fingerprint of this specific soil, this specific valley, these specific hands. That's not a marketing claim — it's a farm thing. And bring the whole family — well-behaved dogs are welcome everywhere on the farm, indoors and out.

Craft Beer, Farm-Grown

Over 25 rotating recipes, with multiple award winners among them. Hops and herbs grown right here, fermented in our on-site brewery. You're drinking the valley's terroir, one sip at a time.

Pub Fare & Farm Bites

The kitchen serves daily in the Main Taproom — honest, satisfying food that earns its place next to a cold pint. Think farm-fresh ingredients, local sourcing, and plates that don't take themselves too seriously.

Patio & Gazebo

An open-air event space just off the taproom, built around a garden gazebo with the Massanutten as a backdrop. Perfect for showers, small ceremonies, engagement parties, or just spilling outside with a pint in hand.

Live Music & Events

Regular live music, seasonal celebrations, and taproom events that make a Wednesday feel like a weekend. Check back often — the calendar is always filling up and the fire pits don't light themselves.

The Big Barn

A venue that was
born to celebrate.

The timber-framed barn has hosted hundreds of weddings, reunions, retreats, and parties. It wasn't built to be a venue — it was built to last, and it does.

Weddings & Receptions

Indoor ceremony space, an outdoor gazebo patio built for "I do," full bar, on-site coordination, and the Massanutten as your backdrop. We've done hundreds — and every one has been different.

Rehearsal Dinners & Gatherings

Intimate evenings in the barn or out at the gazebo patio. Custom catering, brewery pours, and a setting that does more for the mood than any decorator ever could.

Corporate Retreats & Private Events

An hour from DC and Tysons Corner. Flexible indoor-outdoor spaces, brewery tours, custom menus, and the kind of atmosphere that turns a "work event" into something people actually talk about afterward.
